DEG finds most OEMs ship bumper covers raw and unprimed

The Database Enhancement Gateway (DEG) has updated its bumper condition report to reflect 2025-2026 model year vehicles, finding that most OEMs ship bumper covers in a raw, unprimed condition.
“These parts require additional preparation steps before painting,” the report states. “Therefore, it is essential for information providers to account for and automate this required additional labor in their estimating databases.”
Genesis, Hyundai, Mazda, Infiniti, Kia, Mitsubishi, Nissan, Lexus, Lucid, Rivian, Subaru, Tesla, and Toyota are shipped raw.
Acura, Audi, BMW, Chrysler, Ford, Honda, JLR, Mercedes-Benz, Porsche, and Volkswagen bumper covers are shipped primed.
General Motors, Saturn, and Volvo ship most bumper covers primed or pre-painted, but some are shipped raw.
The formula for CCC is 25%, with a maximum allowance per panel of one hour. The automatic formula is only available for bumper covers under “Additional Operations,” and other components would require a manual entry.
For all three estimating providers, material cost and duplicate labor effort are not-included operations. Mitchell and Audatex use a 20% formula.
Mitchell users can locate “Raw Substrate Prep” under Reference Sheet>Additional Operations> Refinish, or by entering code 933038. End users will need to manually calculate 20% of base refinish time for any unprimed plastic part.
Audatex’s automatic formula is only available for bumper covers in the bumper selection operations. Other components would require manual entry.
