Hyundai recalls vehicle for front camera software issue that activates brakes unexpectedly

Published on May 28, 2026

Hyundai has recalled more than 400,000 vehicles due to a software issue that may activate the brakes unexpectedly, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) report

Recalled vehicles include the Santa Cruz, Tucson, Tucson Hybrid, and Tucson Plug-in Hybrid Electric (PHEV).

“Software in the front cameras may cause the forward collision avoidance system to activate prematurely and unexpectedly apply the brakes,” the NHTSA report states.

A report notes that the cameras may exhibit increased object sensitivity to forward object proximity due to the software.

“Sudden braking may increase the risk of a rear-end crash with closely following vehicles,” the report states.

Hyundai has received 376 reports related to the front cameras between October 28, 2024, and April 27, 2026, the report states. Four of those reports indicated crashes in which the Hyundai vehicles were rear-ended. The crashes resulted in four injuries with no fires or fatalities.

It adds that dealers will update the front camera software for free. The remedy is for the camera software to be tuned to better align with operator expectations for activation timing and distance to leading vehicles, the report says.

A notification letter to owners is expected to be mailed on July 17. VINs are already searchable on NHTSA.gov via the recall lookup page.
