Effective Jan. 1, more auto parts could be added to Section 232 tariffs

Effective Jan. 1, a process has been established to include additional auto parts within the scope of the duties authorized by President Donald Trump under Section 232 tariffs, according to a new International Trade Administration notice.
The process was established by the Bureau of Industry and Security (BIS), in collaboration with the International Trade Administration (ITA). The notice opens the January 2026 inclusions window for submissions, closing at 11:59 p.m. on Jan. 14.
On March 26, Trump issued Proclamation 10908, “Adjusting Imports of Automobiles and Automobile Parts Into the United States,” which imposed specified rates of duty on imports of vehicles and certain parts. It also required the Secretary of Commerce to establish a process for including additional parts within the scope of the duties established in the proclamation.
An interim final rule published on Sept. 17 established a process for including additional auto parts within the scope of the duties authorized by Trump under section 232 of the Trade Expansion Act of 1962, as amended. The IFR established recurring two-week windows each year for submissions of auto parts to be due on the first day of January, April, July, and October.
Requests must be submitted to [email protected]. Following the close of the submission window, accepted inclusion requests will be posted for a two-week public comment period on Docket ID ITA-2025-0039 on Regulations.gov.
The Auto Care Association (ACA) notes that, “Parties considering requesting inclusion of their products on the Section 232 auto parts list, including for purposes of unstacking from reciprocal tariffs, may wish to consult with trade counsel or other subject matter experts, as there is currently no established process to remove products from the Section 232 list if tariff rates or trade actions change in the future.”
