Subaru announces ISO certification for chip system

Subaru recently announced that it has obtained an ISO 26262 certification for the development of the “system on a chip” (SoC) in its next-generation EyeSight.
The certification, which is the international standard for automotive functional safety, was granted by the third-party certification body SGS-TÜV Saar GmbH, a joint venture established by SGS and TÜV Saar. SGS is a Swiss inspection and certification company. TÜV Saar is a German technical inspection association.
According to the release, the certification applies to the semiconductor Soft IP. The Soft IP is the design information used to define the semiconductor functions.
The Soft IP has been certified to Automotive Safety Integrity Level (ASIL-C), which evaluates the risk level associated with system failures. It is classified into four levels: A, B, C, and D. A C level is the second-highest level. The higher the ASIL level the more serious the consequences would be if the system fails, which requires tougher safety controls.
“This is the first case in Japan of an automaker obtaining ASIL certification under ISO 26262 in the semiconductor field,” the release says. “For its next-generation EyeSight system, Subaru has adopted AMD’s Versal AI Edge Series Gen 2 adaptive SoC and is designing circuits to customize the SoC in order to achieve cutting-edge AI inference performance and ultra-low latency processing at low cost.”
The Application-Specific Integrated Circuit (ASIC) refers to a custom semiconductor chip designed for a specific function or purpose. The ASIC portion of the SoC incorporates Subaru’s proprietary in-house circuitry specialized for stereo camera recognition and AI inference processing.
“Under its all-around safety philosophy, Subaru will continue to enhance EyeSight and other advanced technologies by further deepening collaboration with partners and advancing its own in-house development in intelligent domains such as semiconductors and software, with the aim of achieving zero fatal traffic accidents in 2030,” the release says.
