GM revises position statements to add ‘strictly prohibits’ language
GM has once again revised its position statements to strengthen language around the use of OEM parts.
The automaker has made multiple revisions to its position statements in recent months. The newest updates add the words “strictly prohibits” in red throughout the statements.
In the Aftermarket Parts position statement, the language has been changed to strictly prohibit the use of salvage, recycled, used, or non-Genuine parts. It also strictly prohibits the use of non-GM reconditioned parts in collision, structural, or system-dependent repairs.
The language is also found in an ADAS position statement, where the automaker strictly prohibits the use of salvaged, recycled, reconditioned, remanufactured, aftermarket, or any secondary-market ADAS radars, cameras, sensors, or related components that are not approved.
A Bumper Fascia Repair with ADAS Technology position statement strictly prohibits the use of aftermarket, reconditioned, or salvage bumpers/fascias on ADAS-equipped GM vehicles.
GM also strictly prohibits the use of used, salvaged, or imitation parts for the repair of supplemental restraint systems (SRS) in its new SRS position statement.
A Windshield Replacement position statement also strictly prohibits the use of aftermarket or non-GM OE glass for windshield replacements.
In April, GM updated its ADAS position statement to add language emphasizing the technology as a safety feature that must be restored to pre-loss condition.
A portion of the position released in March states, “GM Genuine Parts are designed, engineered, tested, and validated by GM.”
The revised statement released April 23 states, “GM Genuine Parts are designed, engineered, tested, validated, and in many instances function as safety features. Many of these technologies help support crash avoidance, driver awareness, or occupant protection, and their performance must be restored to pre-loss condition using GM-approved repair and calibration procedures.”
In April, another section of the position statement removed the wording “not recommended” when discussing the use of aftermarket or non-genuine parts and accessories in ADAS sensor areas.
The revised statement was changed to state, “The use of salvaged, recycled, reconditioned, remanufactured, aftermarket, or any secondary-market ADAS radars, cameras, sensors, or related components is not approved by GM.”
The most recent changes now state, “is not approved and strictly prohibited by GM.”
