Lucid now has approved patents for a new vehicle model, reportedly dubbed the Cosmos.
According to InsideEVs, Lucid is ramping the launch of its competing model to Tesla’s Model Y and Rivian’s R2 by the end of this year.
“Christened the Cosmos, the roughly $50,000 midsize crossover will be the electric automaker’s first model with the potential for mass appeal,” the article states.
While patent images and information obtained by Repairer Driven News don’t specify the name Cosmos, the patents do show a new unreleased Lucid vehicle. And during the company’s Investor Day held in March, three models were teased: the Cosmos, Earth, and an unnamed model geared toward “active explorers.”
Lucid is moving through the approval process for a newly patented car design under the European Union Intellectual Property Office using the name Atieva Inc., which InsideEVs notes is the company’s previous name.
The patents include several exterior and interior design components, as well as the vehicle as a whole.
“The filing doesn’t mention the name Cosmos, but I can confirm that this looks like the exact car Lucid brought to Investor Day in New York City early this year,” states staff writer Suvrat Kothari in the InsideEVs article. “I got a look at an early Cosmos behind closed doors. Photography wasn’t allowed at the event, but I was allowed to discuss what I saw.
“The Cosmos looks like a shrunken Gravity with a cab-forward design and a large Lucid emblem plastered on the nose, much larger than the one on the Gravity and the Air. It looked pretty stunning in person, with a sculpted, aggressive design. The rear may not suit everyone’s taste. The roof is sharply raked, and a spoiler cuts across the rear glass, which is why there’s a digital rearview camera for better rear visibility.”
Kothari further noted that the Cosmos is “trying to be much sportier, like the Audi Q6 Sportback e-tron.”
According to Lucid’s Investor Day presentation, the midsize models offer up to 70% lower unit costs with the same Lucid performance and DNA.
Venturing into the midsize segment makes its vehicle more available to a larger demographic and is expected to increase the automaker’s total addressable market (TAM) by around 10 times, according to the presentation.
The presentation also states that Lucid holds 10% of the total electric vehicle market and aims to increase that to 60% by bringing in new buyers with its midsize models.
The presentation states, “Lucid Midsize will set the benchmark for the premium driving experience” through design, range, performance, experience, and accessibility.
