Minneopolis nonprofit repair shop forced to raise rates from inflation as demand booms

A Minneapolis nonprofit repair shop is increasing its labor rate due to inflation at a time when it says its “swamped” with an influx of clients, according to a local news report.
NBC reports that The Lift Garage, which provides free multi-point vehicle inspections and offers “deeply” discounted mechanical repairs for residents who qualify under the federal poverty guidelines, is raising its rates to offset increased costs caused by international trade tariffs, transportation logistics, and general overhead increases.
The garage increased its rates for the first time in 12 years last year and is doing so again this year, bringing the rate to $28.
This comes at a time when Lift Garage Service Manager Atom Robinson told NBC that demand is “off the charts.”
“Our phone system gets overwhelmed and shuts down sometimes just because people really, really want appointments here,” Robinson said in an interview with NBC.
He added that 100 appointments are opened each month, and they are usually filled within minutes.
Robinson said the shop is seeing more consumers decide they’re unable to afford full repairs.
“There are plenty of times that we schedule an inspection for someone, hand them our estimate, they look at the estimate and even at our substantially reduced rates, [and] they say, ‘I can’t afford this,’ and their car limps off our lot.”
The increased rates are to cover the overhead increases the nonprofit is facing, he said.
Yet, he finds the mission important for safety.
“It is not just the Mom whose car we fix,” Robinson said. “It’s me driving on the road next to them. I want every car on the road to be as safe as possible, and that is really our mission here.”
Collision repair shops are facing similar increasing costs in parts due to tariffs and other factors while also facing insurance pressures to reimburse less for labor rates, along with short payments.
