Body shop employee injured in Missouri cleaning chemicals fire

Cleaning chemicals used inside of a body shop in Maryland Heights, Missouri, are believed to be the cause of a fire that sent an employee to the hospital on May 20, according to local St. Louis Metro media reports.
The Maryland Heights Fire Protection District responded to Olde Style Body Shop at about 4:15 p.m., according to Fox2 Now.
Another report from the TV station says a worker at the shop was seriously hurt and rushed to a local hospital.
Matt Pagno, with the Maryland Heights Fire Protection District, explained to the TV station how these type of chemical fires can start.
“A lot of times whenever the chemicals are in use, vapors from them come off, and then when they find a source of ignition, those vapors ignite and that’s what causes fire,” Pagno said.
He urged using standard safety precautions, ensuring a space is well ventilated, and said it’s important to keep ignition sources away from chemicals during use, the news report says.
Three fire departments responded to the scene. Ameren and Spire assisted in securing the area as police shut down nearby roads.
