I-CAR ‘Just in Time’ videos show how to use torque wrenches in tight quarters

I-CAR has released a new “Just in Time” video focused on the proper use of a torque wrench in different scenarios.
“Tight quarters are no excuse for loose adherence to torque specifications,” a summary of the video states. “Critical areas like steering and suspension require fasteners to be torqued correctly, even if they seem hard to access.”
Jason Hauboldt, I-CAR senior associate and subject expert, explains that using a crowsfoot wrench or torque adapters can help in some areas, such as ball joints.
He also shows how adaptors can help keep things like suspensions from turning while using a torque wrench.
In a second video, Hauboldt describes how to calculate the correct torque setting when using adapters at different angles.
Haubold said there are times when you can’t get on the fastener with the adapter at a 90-degree angle.
When using a torque adapter not at 90 degrees, you need to know a few measurements. He said this includes the measurement from the center of the torque wrench handle to the center of the head where the adapter attaches. You also need to measure from the center of the head to the center of the torque adapter.
He then provides information on how to add those measurements to a formula provided in the video.
Hauboldt said that some higher-end torque tools have a field where measurements can be added, and the tool will do the formula.
