PPG, other paint and material suppliers raising prices amid rising supply chain costs

Published on April 20, 2026

PPG has announced a global price increase of up to 20% across its paints, coatings, and specialty products portfolio that it says reflects the company’s “continued commitment to maintaining [a] reliable supply of its high-performance products to customers amid a rapidly evolving global cost environment.”

In November 2025, PPG notified U.S. Automotive Refinish Distributors of a January 2026 weighted average increase. Axalta announced an average price increase effective March 2026. BASF Automotive Refinish also announced a weighted average price increase effective in March, and AkzoNobel announced an upcoming average price increase in May. The announced increases for all four companies range from 6.8% to 7.6%.

According to price increase notices tracked by Repairer Driven News, the cumulative average price increase for the top five automotive refinish lines in the U.S. has been 75.87% since 2020.

3M also communicated to customers that there will be a regular price change taking effect on April 1, 2026, and an additional increase related to fuel and energy costs taking effect in May 2026, which will apply to all products, including both standard and deviated pricing.

PPG says in an April 15 press release that global petrochemical, energy, and transportation markets have experienced significant volatility and supply constraints in recent weeks, “driven by factors outside the control of individual suppliers or manufacturers.”

“This is resulting in higher costs for raw materials, energy, logistics, and packaging across the coatings value chain,” the release states.

PPG’s price increase will roll out on a customer-by-customer basis or as existing contracts allow. The release says certain product categories, technologies, and regions may require larger increases to offset current cost inflation, and additional price increases may occur in the future as market conditions continue to evolve.

“Our top priority remains supporting our customers with consistent quality, dependable supply and technical expertise, even as market conditions remain highly dynamic,” said Tim Knavish, PPG chairman and CEO, in the release. “This pricing action allows us to ensure availability of supply as we navigate unexpected and increased cost pressures.”

Effective March 1, Axalta increased its Spies Hecker products. A letter to customers about the increase from Axalta Refinish North America Vice President Jeremy VanAlstyne states the products would continue to be “very competitively priced.”

Effective March 20, BASF increased its Glasurit and R-M products, citing sustained cost increase pressures.

The increases are meant to allow BASF to “continue providing the highest levels of quality, service, and commercial excellence,” according to a Feb. 20 letter to customers from BASF Automotive Refinish product management.

The letter notes that prices on machines, mixing lids and sticks, spouts, and other equipment may also increase due to rising costs.

Effective May 1, AkzoNobel plans to raise prices on its Sikkens, Modern Classikk, U-TECH, Sikkens Autocoat BT, and non-paint products.

Due to limited availability, April purchases are limited to each customer’s average purchase over the last 12 months, according to a March 16 letter from Maximilien Schréder, AkzoNobel Automotive & Specialty Coatings Business Director – North America, to customers.

“We understand that price adjustments can be concerning, and we are committed to continuing to provide you with the highest quality products and services,” the letter states. “We genuinely appreciate your understanding and continued support.”

3M informed customers of an additional price increase effective May 1, following its regular price change effective April 1.

A March 31 letter to customers states that an additional increase will apply to all products, including those at standard and deviated pricing.

“We understand that changes like these can be challenging, and we are committed to providing clear, timely communication so you can plan with confidence and continue to receive the high level of service you expect from 3M,” the letter states. “[D]ue to ongoing volatility in fuel and energy markets, we will be implementing an additional increase with a revised date of May 1, 2026, later than previously communicated.”

It states that orders placed after April 17 that haven’t shipped before May 1 will reflect the additional fuel and energy price increase. Any unshipped order line with a requested delivery date on or after May 1 (including blanket orders) will also reflect the additional fuel and energy price increase.
